Digital Opening: DicoveryEducation.com

DiscoveryEducation.com is an extraordinary resource for both the classroom teacher and also for parents. It is broken down into five main categories, and I will provide an overview of two that I found to be most useful.

I. Classroom Resources—contains many sub-topics of valuable content for use both in and out of the classroom.
·         Puzzlemaker—find a premade crossword, word search, math puzzle, etc, or customize your own.
·         Lesson Plans—k-5, 6-8, or 9-12
Ø  Provides grade level, subject, and time duration for each lesson
Ø  Adaptations, Evaluation, Extension, Readings, Links, Vocab, and Standards—some lessons provide more than others
Ø  ex. AstronomyàLesson plan titled “Path to Mars”: contains all of the content above
·         Featured Content—Miscellaneous resources to use in the classroom
Ø  Hub for Teachers—based off of Discovery’s TV partnership with the new kid’s channel, HUB
-contains step-by-step guide to the writing process
with standards and suggestions for at-home
            activities
Ø  All About Computers—lesson plans for integrating technology in the classroom
Ø  New Teacher Survival Central
            -The Classroom Environment: tips on
furniture/room design, labeling, wall and shelf
            space, classroom library, organizational tools,
bulletin boards, and creative learning centers
            -Also resources for Classroom Management,
            Parent Communicationand Green Scene, which
provides curriculum and tips for having a green
            classroom
Ø  Parent Corner
-Motivation Station: Tips and suggestions to help
kids with fitting in, teamwork, homework, and
            sibling rivalry
-Create & Inspire: Things to do with kids to help
with homework, praise their work, or activities
            that are just for fun
II. Home Resources
·         Homework Help: Select a subject
Ø  Neatly organized video tutorials explain basics
Ø  additional web resources at the bottom of the page
·         These Home Resources along with the “Parent Corner” tab under Classroom Resources would be great to use during a parent workshop at the beginning of the year in order to equip parents with the basic knowledge so that they can help their child with their homework. Also, links to these videos can be provided on the class website or in a newsletter to guide parents to a specific video that pertains to what their child is currently learning.

This overview barely scratches the surface of all that DiscoveryEducation.com has to offer. Overall, this site is a fantastic resource for both teachers and parents. I will definitely consider using this website as a resource in my own future classroom, and I would encourage you to explore the site some more and discover all of the tools that it can provide in your own classroom!
